We recently had our Kids Club and After School Program Graduation in Budila! What an amazing time it was for all the kids, teachers and volunteers who have worked so hard this past school year. The kids sang songs for us, and we handed out certificates to those who were graduating out of our Kids Club Program, 8th Grade and High School.
This has been our first full school year working with the children of the After School Program. We had a big task ahead of us as the majority of our children were really behind in the studies. Many of all ages could not do simple math or read. But the teachers and volunteers did not give up on our kids, we all worked hard, wanting to see our kids succeed.
Math was a very big part of our school year, and we did our best to make it interesting for the kids, playing games and using our new white boards to make it interesting for the kids and to allow them to interact in fun ways. We also focused on reading, and even had a Reading Club for part of the year to work with a handful of 4th grade students who were really behind in their reading.
The result of consistent hard work, interaction and encouragement was more than we could have hoped for. The students blossomed and excelled! Basic letters and numbers were learned, math was understood, reading became easier and homework was completed. Many of our students are not able to get the help they need to do their homework and to continue learning at home, which is why this program is so vital to their education.
But perhaps the most important thing that was accomplished this year, was our students learned they were loved. Each meeting they heard a Bible story and sang Christian songs. They learned how the Bible and the words of Jesus applied to their own lives. Every single day when they came to class they were greeted with smiles and hugs by their teachers and volunteers. Children who were isolated began to feel safe and loved and accepted.
